What are the Symptoms of Bowel Cancer and where to get help

What are the Symptoms of Bowel Cancer and where to get help is can be an embarrassing situation for some people.

Not many people feel open enough to talk about bowel movements and changes to bowels and poo! but this is an important subject and knowing the signs may save your life.

The symptoms of bowel cancer can be subtle and don’t necessarily make you feel poorly, however more than 90% of people with bowel cancer have one of the following combinations of symptoms: a persistent change in bowel habit – e.g going more often, with looser stools and sometimes tummy pain.

The symptoms of bowel (colorectal) cancer in men and women can include: bleeding from the back passage (rectum) or blood in your poo and pain in your abdomen or back passage.                                                                    Tiredness and breathlessness caused by a lower than normal level of red blood cells (anaemia)

If you have any of these symptoms which can also include very strong smelling poo then you should see a G.P as soon as possible. Remember to explain about all your symptoms and you may need to provide a sample. Of course some of the symptoms can be linked to other conditions such as Crohns Disease, Hemorrhoids, Poor diet, or a stomach virus so it is important to note down symptoms and the length of time you have been suffering with them.

Tests to find cancer in the bowel.

The main test used to look for bowel cancer is a colonoscopy (camera via the bottom)  Other tests that are sometimes used to diagnose bowel cancer include CT Colonography and Sigmoidoscopy.

How to decrease your risk of developing Bowel Cancer.

A good diet, high in fibre is a great place to start. Reducing your intake of regular red meat and alcohol is also advised by the NHS. Not being over weight and not smoking will also help as will taking regular exercise.
